Light Vs. Dark Timber - Choosing the right colour for your home.

Although the choice between light and dark wood flooring ultimately comes down to personal preference there are many other factors to consider when you’re on the search for the perfect Tasmanian timber to suit your home or project.

When it comes to flooring the colour you choose will always have an important impact on the overall feeling of the room.

When to choose Darker Timber flooring -

If you are attempting to give your space a cosy and rustic feel, a dark timber floor like our Shannon Rise or Tamar Mist may be the right choice for you. This is because dark floors match more aesthetically with the kinds of furniture associated with provincial and restful design. Think lush velvet accents and leather statement pieces.

When to go for a Lighter Timber Floor -

If your home or project is not blessed with high ceilings or an abundance of natural light a darker timber can enclose the space, whilst a lighter timber can make rooms feel bigger and brighter. Lighter options like our Cradle Sky, Huon Trail or Derwent breeze provide you with a light stain that looks fantastic when contrasted with darker detailing, such as darker granite bench-tops or industrial lighting.

Other Considerations -

One of the main benefits of choosing a lighter coloured stain is that it’s much easier to keep clean especially if you are building with a family (or pets) in mind.

Dark timber flooring provides for a more dramatic impact, but also can tend to show up more dirt. If you really love the dark look, opt for a stain or matte finish – the combination of high gloss and a dark finish will make maintenance an ongoing task whereas a matte fully finished timber like our Woodsmith Engineered Flooring options minimise the need for regular and ongoing maintenance.
